OTR solid tyres explained
OTR stands for off-the-road: tyres for machines that work away from public roads. In an industrial context that means wheel loaders, container handlers, reach stackers, terminal tractors, and yard equipment in ports, scrap yards, quarries, mines and heavy manufacturing plants.
The case for a solid tyre in these applications is straightforward. A pneumatic tyre on a machine that runs ten hours a day over debris-strewn concrete will eventually go flat, and the cost is not the tyre โ it is the machine that cannot work while the tyre is repaired. A solid tyre removes that failure mode entirely. What it does not do is absorb shock as well as air, which is why the choice between solid and pneumatic is an application decision rather than a blanket rule.
When a solid OTR tyre is the right answer
Many sites run both: solid on the yard and short-cycle machines, pneumatic on the machines that leave the yard. Matching the tyre to what each machine actually does is cheaper than one specification applied to a mixed fleet.
| Condition | Solid OTR tyre | Pneumatic tyre |
|---|---|---|
| Surface with sharp debris (scrap, demolition, concrete) | Preferred โ resists cuts and punctures | High puncture risk |
| Short-cycle, high-load work in a yard | Preferred โ holds shape under load | Sidewalls flex and heat under continuous load |
| Cost of downtime is high | Preferred โ eliminates flats | One flat can idle a machine for a shift |
| Smooth or prepared surfaces | Preferred โ long wear life | Acceptable |
| Rough, uneven or unpaved ground | Harsher ride | Preferred โ cushions the load |
| Long-distance running at higher speed | Not suitable above the rated speed | Preferred |
| Extreme shock loading (large rocks, uneven broken ground) | Risk of impact damage | Preferred |
| Mixed conditions across a site | Usually still preferred indoors/in yards | Preferred for the rough portion |
Construction and compound
A JABIL OTR solid tyre is a moulded rubber product with no air cavity. Because there is no air to absorb shock, the compound and the tyre section do all the work โ which is why compound selection matters more here than on most tyre types.
Where the site is a mix of clean concrete and debris, the conversation is usually about which portion of the duty cycle dominates. Send both the surface and the proportion of time on each, and we will recommend accordingly rather than defaulting to the heaviest compound.
- Cut and chip resistant compound โ for scrap yards, demolition and any surface with sharp metal or stone. Trades some wear life for impact resistance.
- Heavy-duty standard compound โ for general terminal and industrial yard work with moderate debris.
- Deep lug tread โ for traction on loose or contaminated surfaces, at the cost of some rolling efficiency on hard floors.
- Non-marking compound โ available for indoor OTR-style applications where floor marking is not acceptable.
- Anti-static compound โ for hazardous-area applications where static discharge is a risk.
Wholesale and OEM programmes for distributors
JABIL manufactures OTR solid tyres at its own factory in Dongying, Shandong, and supplies wholesale to importers, distributors and equipment rental companies. Because we manufacture rather than resell, orders are priced factory-direct with no trading-company margin added.
To get a wholesale quotation, send a size list with quantities per size and the destination port. Our sales engineers confirm compound options, loading quantity per container and FOB price, usually within 24 hours.
- Factory-direct pricing, no intermediary margin
- OEM and private-brand sidewalls, custom compounds and packaging
- MOQ from 20 pieces per size, with mixed sizes and patterns supported in one container
- Typical production lead time of 15โ25 days after order confirmation
- Pre-shipment inspection report and container loading photos supplied for every order
Information needed to specify an OTR solid tyre
For OTR applications the last two points matter more than they do for warehouse tyres. Side loading from a loaded bucket or a lifting attachment changes the load case significantly, and continuous shifts raise tyre temperature. Both affect safe capacity.
- Machine type, brand and model โ for example a 5-tonne wheel loader or a reach stacker
- The size marked on the existing tyre
- Rim dimensions if the tyre is rim-mounted, or band diameter if it is a press-on application
- Surface and proportion of time on each surface type
- Maximum operating speed and average shift length
- Typical load carried and any side-load condition from attachment work
- Quantity, destination country and required date
Common OTR solid tyre questions
The distinction is by application rather than construction. OTR covers off-road machines: loaders, container handlers, reach stackers and terminal equipment. Industrial covers what works inside buildings and yards. Both can be solid, press-on or rim-mounted.
No. OTR tyres are not designed for continuous high-speed road use, and doing so will generate destructive heat. Machines that need to travel on public roads need a tyre specified for that duty.
Start with the cost of downtime and the surface. If a flat stops a machine that cannot be easily replaced, and the surface is prepared but debris-strewn, solid is usually correct. If the ground is genuinely rough and uneven, pneumatic protects the machine.
Frequently yes, for OEM and volume orders, to drawing or sample. Send the dimensions and expected annual volume and we will confirm feasibility and tooling position honestly.
Yes. Container handlers, reach stackers and terminal tractors are a core part of the industrial range, with compound and tread matched to the surface and duty cycle of the terminal.
MOQ is 20 pieces per size, but you can combine several sizes and patterns in one container. Send the size list and we will build the loading plan so the container is filled efficiently.
Where to go next
For warehouse and counterbalance trucks, the forklift solid tyre range covers 4.00-8 to 35/65-33. If your machines are wheel loaders or container handlers running on rims, check the rims and accessories range for matched assemblies. Compound behaviour under heavy load is covered in inside a wear-resistant solid tyre.
OTR / Engineering Solid Tyres โ Buyer Questions
What does OTR mean in tyres?
OTR stands for Off-The-Road: tyres for machines that work away from public roads, such as wheel loaders, container handlers, reach stackers and industrial equipment in ports, mines, quarries and steel plants.
When should I choose a solid OTR tyre over a pneumatic one?
Solid tyres eliminate punctures and blowouts, hold their shape under heavy load and suit short-cycle, high-load work in yards and terminals where downtime is expensive. Pneumatics remain better where long-distance running and high-speed ride comfort matter more.
What sizes of OTR solid tyres does JABIL produce?
We produce solid tyres and press-on tyres for industrial machines, with the current range concentrated on forklift, press-on and aerial platform sizes. Send the machine model and the size on the existing tyre and we will confirm what we can supply from the factory.
Can solid tyres be fitted to my existing rims?
Rim-mounted solids need the correct rim width and flange type. Send the rim dimensions with the machine details. For press-on applications the tyre is bonded to a band and pressed on, so the band diameter is the critical dimension.
Do you supply to ports and container terminals?
Yes. Solid and press-on tyres for container handlers, reach stackers and terminal tractors are a core part of our industrial range. Compound and tread can be matched to the surface and duty cycle of the terminal.
